December 15, 2012 - Five-ship Formation Flight |
||||||
We had five RVs for today's Formation Flight: myself, Mugsy, Chef, Lawbreaker, and Jolly. We all arrived at Cecil County Airport around 10:30AM. Weather was excellent with nice smooth air. Since I had organized the meet, I was Lead, and I had to think about how things would work with five ships. In the end I went with the basic four-ship formation made up of two sections. Then Chef was #5. Our basic formation would be a big V. It worked pretty well. The four ship would be in a finger-four and then #5 would just be on the other side to round out the V. We had a good brief before the flight and everyone understood how it would work. All the pilots were experienced with formation work. Then we went flying and executed the brief. We practiced all the basic formations -- route, V, echelon, diamond -- and all the basic maneuvers -- crossunders, breaks, rejoins. Unfortunately I couldn't very well take pictures while flying lead, and no one else did either, so there are no pictures. |

Once the formation work was complete,
we flew over to nearby Chester County Airport, did a five-ship overhead
break, landed and had lunch at the on-field restaurant.
